JOLT: What percentage of your time each week in spent on planning for marketing related activity? 5%? 10%? More?
For most small business owners, the only time they look at their marketing action plan is when they are asking their banker for a loan or for their annual line of credit renewal. The rest of the time, it is dusty and irrelevant.
You should set aside some time EACH WEEK to review your marketing plan and compare it to reality. I make a “coffee appointment” with myself once per week to review the plan and update it where necessary. I keep the length to two pages (in bullet format) so it will always be a useful document. I love the idea of a ‘coffee appointment”. Would be interested to see what you put together for a short marketing plan. I hae been playing around with creating a one-page marketing plan — it’s tough to get the length down that short.

The two-page marketing plan is built around our 12 Triggers methodology, which we teach in local seminars and when I am on the road as a pro speaker. We teach all of our graduates to use it and it is also a key element of our monthly Guilds (http://www.BizTrek.com). Thanks for your input. Gil Gerretsen
